Toujours Fidele by D'Orsay c1912

Toujours Fidele by D'Orsay: launched in 1912.  Line included perfume, toilet water, face powder, sachet powder, and talcum powder.



 



Fragrance Composition:


So what does it smell like? It is classified as a blended floral fragrance for women.

Bottles:


 Crystal glass pillow shaped perfume bottle with frosted French bulldog faceted crystal stopper. Baccarat model number 163 first produced in 1912. Also manufactured by Cristal Nancy. The dog was chosen as a symbol of loyalty.



The bottle was originally housed in a fabulous pyramid shaped presentation box covered with a green and gold leaf patterned paper, but by the 1920s, the box was changed to a plain square shaped box was a Greek Key type decoration along the top of the lid. The flacon was available in several sizes:
  • 2.5 oz
  • 2 oz
  • 1 1/3 oz
  • 1 oz

  • 3.5" tall
  • 3" tall
  • 2.75" tall
  • 2.25" tall

The Pharmaceutical Era - Volume 58, 1924:
"The D'Orsay booth — direct from the Rue de la Paix— is unusual in that the walls are covered with priceless tapestries. ... being introduced and the bottle is singularly appropriate, for the glass stopper has been molded by Lalique [sic] in the form of a small dog — Always Faithful."

Theatre Magazine, 1926:
" and d'Orsay's Toujours Fidele, which comes in that enchanting little bottle with the tiny crystal dog for a stopper."


Fashions of the Hour - Page 72, 1932:
"D'Orsay's Toujours Fidele comes in a crystal bottle with an amusing small dog on the stopper. 1 ounce, $5.50."










Other Bottles:


Les Lys Flacon:

The Les Lys Flacon was made for D'Orsay by Rene Lalique. Made up of clear and frosted glass, the bottle is exquisitely molded with an all over floral pattern highlighted with sepia patina. The bottle stands 6.75" tall. 





Ovoid Flacons with Floral Stoppers:

This bottle is unmarked as to manufacturer and stands 3.5" tall and holds 1 ounce of parfum. It dates to the 1920s-1930s and has a paper label. The bottle is ovoid in shape and the cup shaped glass stopper is molded with a floral motif.



Standard Baccarat D'Orsay Flacons:

These Baccarat flacons were used for various D'Orsay perfumes. Baccarat model number 499, was created in 1922 and also used for the perfumes Chypre and Chevalier. The size that I see for this bottle s 8 oz.






 Drug and Cosmetic Industry, 1936:
"D'ORSAY The House of D'Orsay is introducing a crested metal case containing three D'Orsay perfumes, the new Trophee, Le Dandy, and Toujours Fidele. The case makes a handsome cigarette case after the perfumes are gone, and comes in white metal with gold D'Orsay crest, in black with gold crest, and in brushed gold with shiny gold crest."


Plain Bottles:

Drug and Cosmetic Industry, 1939:
"Parfums d'Orsay. — A new perfume series introduced for the Christmas trade is a presentation of the well-known perfumes Belle de Jour, Milord, Dandy, Toujours Fidele, and Trophee in a plain instead of a fancy bottle."


Fate of the Fragrance:


Discontinued, date unknown.
